NFL Week 14 Picks: Philadelphia Eagles and Underdog Locks That'll Cover

Tim DanielsDec 11, 2011

As the NFL regular season continues to wind toward its conclusion, finding smart underdog picks becomes more difficult as their level of intensity usually drops markedly. That said, here are three teams worth picking in Week 14. (All lines courtesy of 5dimes.com.)

Philadelphia Eagles (+3)

Philadelphia's game against Miami is the head-scratching line of the week. The Eagles are coming off a loss against the Seattle Seahawks while the Dolphins just beat the Oakland Raiders, so how come Miami is only a three-point favorite?

When you have to ask yourself that type of question, it's usually a smart idea to go against prevailing wisdom. The Eagles have more talent than their 4-8 record would indicate and are expecting to get a healthy Michael Vick back in the lineup.

Eagles fans might already be looking ahead to next season, but players can't do that. They have to salvage whatever they can from this lost season, including their jobs, which should be enough motivation to illustrate some of the ability fans expected during training camp.

St. Louis Rams (+11)

Sam Bradford is hoping to make his return on Monday night, which would be a big boost to St. Louis' offense against the Seattle Seahawks. It's been a forgettable season for the Rams, but they'd enjoy nothing more than ending the Seahawks' playoff hopes.

This will likely be a low-scoring affair, which makes the idea of getting 11 points to start an intriguing one. Steven Jackson will be asked to carry the load once again. If he can control the clock and therefore quiet Seattle's raucous crowd, the Rams will be in great shape.

The Seahawks should find an escape route eventually to pick up the win, but that probably won't happen until late in the fourth quarter. While it's not often a 2-10 team is worth depending on, this is one of those times.

New York Giants (+4.5)

With the NFC East lead up for grabs, New York's clash with the Dallas Cowboys has the feeling of a game which will be decided by a late field goal. The teams have to play again in a couple weeks, which makes getting the upper hand all the more important.

Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs are both ready to roll on Sunday night. That will take a lot of pressure off Eli Manning by allowing the Giants to utilize a more balanced attack. It should also open up the play-action passing game.

The Giants have won each of their past two trips to Dallas, so don't be surprised if they do it again in Week 14. And even if they lose, they have a good chance to cover the spread.
