NFL Week 14 Picks: Significant Road Underdogs That Will Cover the Spread

Mike ChiariDec 11, 2011

At this point in the NFL season, the oddsmakers have certainly refined their craft, so the point spreads tend to be quite accurate. With that said, there is still plenty of money to be made, however, as you never know what can happen in the NFL.

There are several fairly large spreads in Week 14, and while that signifies good teams playing against poor teams, you can never take a spread for granted. Just last week, the New England Patriots were 21-point favorites at home against the Indianapolis Colts, and many just assumed the Pats would cover.

The Colts hung tough, though, and only ended up losing by seven points in the end. With that tidbit of information in mind, here are three road underdogs that will cover this week.

Kansas City Chiefs (+10.5)

The Kansas City Chiefs have an extremely tough game this weekend against the surging New York Jets, but the Chiefs have been vastly underestimated in recent weeks.

Two weeks ago, Kansas City took the Pittsburgh Steelers to the brink in a close loss, and just last week, the Chiefs were able to pull off an upset against the battered Chicago Bears.

While New York desperately needs this win to keep pace in the AFC wild-card race, the Chiefs certainly won't go quietly. They have played some great, under-the-radar defense lately and while the offense hasn't been there, they have been able to keep games close.

The Jets have a large talent edge thanks to Kansas City's injuries and they likely will keep the Chiefs largely off the scoreboard, but the Chiefs will stay within 10 points if they continue to play strong defense.

Buffalo Bills (+7)

After a 5-2 start to the season, the Buffalo Bills have lost five consecutive games and are essentially out of the playoff hunt in the AFC.

Their opponents this week, the San Diego Chargers, endured a similar slide as they were defeated in six straight games before beating the Jacksonville Jaguars this past Monday night.

During their losing streak, the Bills have lost in all kinds of different ways, but they have lost by just one score in each of their past two contests. Injuries have much to do with Buffalo's recent struggles, but the offense has begun to come to life.

That is also the case with the Chargers as quarterback Philip Rivers has been playing much closer to expectations. While the Bolts will score some points on Buffalo's poor defense, the Bills have played well enough offensively to keep it close.

St. Louis Rams (+10)

In yet another dog Monday-night game, the Seattle Seahawks will host the St. Louis Rams. The Seahawks have played some surprisingly good ball as of late and are currently 5-7, but they aren't overly talented as a team.

The Rams were perhaps the favorites to win the NFC West prior to the season, but a tough schedule and injuries leave them with a mere two wins.

Seattle wiped the floor with the Rams in St. Louis a few weeks ago, so the 10-point spread may seem warranted. The fact of the matter is, however, the Seahawks aren't significantly better than the Rams.

Provided the Rams can stabilize their run defense and hold Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch in check, and the Rams can establish the run with Steven Jackson in return, Monday's game should be much closer than their previous encounter.
