Week 14 Fantasy Football Start Em Sit Em: Vernon Davis and TEs Set to Blow Up

Thad NovakDec 10, 2011

No one is going to be surprised when Rob Gronkowski and Jermichael Finley put up big fantasy numbers again on Sunday. These three TEs, however, have been up-and-down in 2011 but should be decidedly up in Week 14:

Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers

Like most of the 49er offense, Davis hasn’t exactly been lighting up scoreboards on the year. Still, of the five TDs he has caught, one came in his first meeting with Arizona (back in Week 11).

The Cards’ pass defense is ranked 25th in the league and if anything, they’ve been even worse against opposing TEs. Look for Davis to step up in what might be the last good matchup he faces this season.

Brandon Pettigrew, Detroit Lions

Although the Lions’ passing game has produced tons of fantasy points this season, Pettigrew hasn’t always shown up for his share. However, the struggling Minnesota pass defense provides a terrific opportunity for Pettigrew to shine.

In Week 3, Pettigrew lit up the Vikes for 112 yards on 11 catches. Considering that that game was before Jahvid Best got hurt for Detroit and before the Minnesota secondary had completely fallen apart, it’s not unreasonable to think Pettigrew can do even better on Sunday.

Dustin Keller, New York Jets

Mark Sanchez and the Jets’ offense have done terrible things to fantasy owners all season, but the struggling Chiefs should provide a chance to turn things around. While most of the benefit will go to New York’s runners (against K.C.’s 25th-ranked rushing D), Keller has a great chance to steal a score or two here.

The Chiefs’ pass defense on the whole has been solid, but tight ends have been eating them up. Kansas City has allowed the second-most fantasy points to opposing TEs over its current 1-4 stretch, a trend that should continue against the talented—if inconsistent—Keller.
