NBA Rumors: David West Is Perfect Fit for Aging Boston Celtics

Justin WeltonDec 10, 2011

NBA will be back on Christmas Day and there have been plenty of moves in free agency and trades in the past few days that have turned heads.

David West is the latest free high-profile free agent on the move. He is a perfect fit for the Boston Celtics not only for this season, but for years to come.

West is a two-time NBA All-Star capable of putting on dynamite offensive performances if he plays with a great point guard. Few are better than Rajon Rondo for the Celtics.

This Season

Boston still lacks at center without a guy like Kendrick Perkins, but the NBA isn’t about dominating centers like the golden days. If it was about dominating centers, Dwight Howard would have won a couple NBA Championships by now.

The Celtics could go small and have both West and Kevin Garnett on the floor. Both of those players will be able to draw forwards out to the perimeter, opening up lanes for Rondo, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

With the NBA playing more back-to-back games, West will be able to provide the 35-year-old Garnett with games off. West will also allow Garnett to play less minutes on the floor in particular games.

Future Seasons

It’s apparent that the “Big Three” are dwindling down in their careers, especially Garnett. Bringing in West will give the Celtics a reliable power forward that is capable of putting up points at a solid clip for at least two more years.

If Garnett decides to hang up his shoes after this season, the Celtics would still be a team that could make noise.

Analyzing the Celtics

West coming to Boston is getting all the headlines but Brandon Bass is an underrated acquisition. He was traded from the Orlando Magic for Glen Davis on Friday.

The 26-year-old gives the Celtics youth in the frontcourt, capabilities of guarding multiple positions and athleticism.

He had his best season as a professional last season with the Magic. He scored 11.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in 26 minutes played per game. He shot a career high 52 percent from the floor in 2010-11.

Boston needs to get younger in multiple areas. Garnett, Allen and Pierce won’t be around forever. The addition of not only West but Bass will help in that area.

Conclusion

Boston gets younger and more talented with the move. Hopefully West can retain to his all-star form so we can really see how he could play with Rondo, a point guard that will give him multiple open looks because of his ability to slash to the basket and play in pick-and-roll.

Not only does West give the Celtics a better opportunity to win the NBA Championship this season, but it also makes them better off in the future.

West to Boston is a perfect fit in more ways than one.
