Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Deal May Be Close, Good Fit for Magic Center

Kelly ScalettaDec 9, 2011

Dwight Howard is expected to tell the Orlando Magic today that he wants to be traded to the New Jersey Nets. If these reports are true then he has made the right choice. The ideal situation for the superstar center is with the New Jersey Nets.

On Mike and Mike in the Morning Chris Broussard of ESPN stated that the deal was "really close to going through."

If it does, Dwight Howard will be in the perfect place. First and foremost, he would be with Deron Williams, and that would have him playing with an elite point guard. In the NBA, the two most important positions are the point guard and the center, and the Nets, upon acquiring Howard, would be the best situated of those two positions since Magic Johnson ran with Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

It's not just that they would both be stars either. There's the fact that they would mesh incredibly well together in their styles. Howard is a huge low post presence and Williams is a terrific pick and roll point guard.

Williams is both a scorer and a facilitator. Howard is so dominant in the paint that it would prevent teams form double teaming Williams. It's hard to envision a scenario where a team could shut down both players, and if they could, they would have to do so almost at the cost of ignoring the rest of the team.

The Nets are also in the process of shopping for a new wing. One player they've been linked to is Andrei Kirilenko. Kirilenko is a player that Williams already knows well from their play together in Utah. The Nets could also re-sign their power forward, Kris Humphries, who blossomed last year when Deron Williams came to the team.

It's unlikely that the Nets would be able to stay in the hunt for Nene, though, if they land the biggest fish in the sea, Dwight Howard.

Certainly the team would be a team to contend with and Howard would have by far his best point guard ever feeding him the ball.

On a personal note it would be ideal for Howard too. Howard has long desired to play in the bright lights of the big city, and with the impending move to Brooklyn, he could have that in this trade.

It's hard to imagine a better situation for the Nets or for Dwight Howard than the two being together.
