Having Heavyweights Fight in the Main Event on Versus Fight Night Is a Mistake

Matthew HemphillDec 9, 2011

It seems the main event and co-main event have finally been set for Versus' first fight card.

The co-main event is a fun fight between prospect spoilers Jesus Soto-Karass and Gabriel Rosado. Both fighters are exciting and no matter what their records are, they will deliver a great fight.  It is the kind of matchmaking boxing needs more of.

Both men will walk into the ring and produce a fun slugfest, with each needing a win for different reasons.

For Soto-Karass, it is because he has lost three in a row and if he loses another, it may just be the end of the line for TV paydays.  For Rosado, it means a chance at a higher level of fighter and a chance to insert himself in boxing's upper echelons.

Then there is the main event, which includes heavyweights.

Neither fighter who will be in the main event is being known for being terrible in the ring or fighting boring fights.  At the same time, they don't always have entertaining slugfests, either.

One of the two fighters is known for being decent.

Sergei Liakhovich has been known to put on decent fights when he comes in shape and is facing an opponent who is willing to strike with him blow for blow.

Unfortunately, his opponent is Eddi Chambers, who is able to throw lots of punches but seems to do it on his back foot more often than not.

It is understandable, considering that Chambers is much smaller than most of the heavyweights he has to face.  Still, it doesn't help him make interesting fights, and it doesn't help boxing overall.

Considering this is Versus' first boxing match in a long time, especially after the fiasco they had with letting Bob Arum run their last program, it isn't the wisest decision.

Heavyweights will always draw, but in recent years that has only been for five minutes before people started changing the channel.

It would be nice if this was one of the times where that wasn't the case.

Still, it would have been better if boxing fans wouldn't have to tune in on Jan. 21 and see a main event that might end terribly and might banish boxing off Versus.

So in January, fans might have to turn on their TV's, cross their fingers and hope for the best.
