Ohio State Football: What Coaches Can Urban Meyer Bring into Columbus?

Tim BielikDec 8, 2011

We are now nearly two weeks into the Urban Meyer era at Ohio State, and so far there are only three coaches that are for sure on Meyer's staff.

He has kept Luke Fickell and Stan Drayton over from last year's team, but given them altered roles—Fickell to co-defensive coordinator and Drayton from WR coach to RB coach.

And on Thursday, Meyer made his first offensive coaching hire, bringing in Iowa State offensive coordinator Tom Herman as the quarterbacks coach.

At first glance, this is a pretty good hire, because any QB coach that has ever coached a quarterback has a better resume than former QB coach Nick Siciliano.

But looking deeper into his resume, as Along the Olentangy did, Herman looks to be a rising star in the coaching ranks.

As the offensive coordinator at Iowa State, he has helped lead some capable offenses that rely on spreading the ball over the field, something that an Urban Meyer offense does well.

It's also interesting to see an OC from an AQ-conference take a step down to QB coach. But Herman is a very nice hire and a good start to what could be a strong coaching staff.

The status of the rest of the coaching staff remains to be seen, as Ohio labor laws suggest that the status of the unfilled positions cannot be declared until some point in the coming days because of how long jobs must be posted.

Rumors have circulated that the two favorites to be the next OSU offensive coordinator, LSU offensive line coach Greg Studrawa and Clemson OC Chad Morris, have each signed extensions to stay where they are.

On the defensive side, former Arizona coach Mike Stoops was offered the job as OSU co-defensive coordinator right alongside Fickell.

But Stoops has kept his future plans quiet as he is still deliberating other offers as well.

If the Herman hire is any indication, Meyer has the right idea in mind of how he wants to build his staff.

Offensively, there are still other names out there that could make Ohio State's staff, including Temple WR coach Zach Smith and Wyoming OC Gregg Brandon among others.

Fickell is still going to be there defensively and Mike Vrabel might be asked to stick around as well.

The defensive staff is more up in the air because there haven't been as many hot names linked to the job at the moment. But that doesn't mean Meyer won't find the right guy for the job.

If there is any doubt about what type of coaching staff Meyer can put together, this is the staff that Meyer took with him to Florida when he was hired in 2005.

Looking at that list, other than Meyer, four of them are head coaches and one, Greg Mattison, spent a few seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens.

Coaching staffs like that aren't all that common.

Buckeye fans should take note that Meyer knows how to put together a staff, as that list shows.

The reported hire of Tom Herman is a great start. It's a good time to sit back and see who else comes with Herman to Columbus.
