Lakers Rumors: Dwight Howard a More Likely Christmas Present Than Chris Paul

Tim KeeneyDec 8, 2011

A whole lot of Los Angeles Lakers fans started getting really excited a couple of days ago when it was being reported that L.A. was in the mix for both Dwight Howard and Chris Paul.

Really, who wouldn't be in the mix for those two?

Nevertheless, as the rumors went on, it appeared the Lakers were indeed actual contenders for the two hottest names.

However, it is now looking like any potential Chris Paul trade is less and less likely. ESPN is reporting that the New Orleans Hornets are cooling off on most trade offers.

The Warriors and Clippers were really going after the point guard over the last couple of days, but those talks seem to have died.

The Celtics and Lakers are still contenders for Paul's services, but it just seems like the Hornets are asking for too much.

It's tough to mortgage your whole future when trading for someone who might leave in free agency the next year. This is why acquiring Paul may be a long shot for the Lake Show.

They are reportedly trying to build a package around 31-year-old Pau Gasol and really don't want to give up much more than that for what could be just one year of the talented point guard.

If a package centered around Gasol is the most the Lakers are going to offer—and the ESPN report makes that clear—then I find it hard to believe that they'll get him.

The Celtics are reportedly offering Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green and two first-round picks. If I'm the Hornets, I'm taking that deal over the Gasol one in a heartbeat.

Gasol is obviously a talented player, but he's 31 and looked quite horrible in last year's playoffs.

Things just aren't looking good for Paul to the Lakers.

However, don't fret just yet, Laker Nation. The fact that L.A. wants to use Gasol in order to acquire Paul means they are saving their best trade chip, Andrew Bynum, for a shot at Dwight Howard.

Not only is there a much better chance of a deal surrounding those players getting done, but it is also very likely that Howard signs an extension with L.A.

The Chris Paul talks may be cooling down, but Dwight Howard will still serve as a decent Christmas present.
