Miami Heat Rumors: Shane Battier Signing Does Nothing to Help Heat Win Title
Shane Battier made some noise today when he announced via his Twitter feed that he would be signing with the Miami Heat tomorrow.
It’s not going to do anything to help the team in their quest to win the NBA Finals next year.
The 33-year-old Duke alumni is going to take what is left of his talents to South Beach but he won’t be a factor and certainly doesn’t do anything at all to address their most pressing needs.
The Heat need a productive point guard, and even more so, a center that actually would make another team's roster.
The fact that they somehow even made it through the East last year with a combination of Joel Anthony, Erick Dampier, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Dexter Pittman and Jamaal Magloire all filling in at the position is insane.
If you could combine all of those guys' best skills, I still don’t think you have a center better than the Dallas Mavericks’ Tyson Chandler, who made a huge difference in the Finals with his defense and ability to control the paint.
So instead of saving their cap room (if Battier is signing for more than a veteran’s minimum deal, and he should be), the Heat now have another player who can fill in at the two and three spots on the floor. Do they really need that with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade starting?
Honestly, it’s not that terrible of a signing if it is just for the minimum and he can still be productive, but he’s not going to add anything that cost them a title last year.
The team should be focusing all of their effort on landing someone like Samuel Dalembert, who can grab boards, put the ball in the basket and protect the rim.
If they don’t do that, this signing is a complete waste and it will just end it more disappointment for the Heat.
