MLB Free Agency: Top 7 Power Hitters on the Market and Where They'll Go

Kyle BrownDec 9, 2011

After Albert Pujols signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who are the best remaining power hitters on the free-agent market, and where will they go?

Even though Pujols was clearly the cream of the crop, there still are a few quality power hitters available. As you might have heard, Prince Fielder is still a free agent.

Here's a list of the top power hitters still looking to sign.

Jason Kubel

1 of 7

Jason Kubel isn't necessarily regarded as a power hitter, but his 28 home runs in 2009 would beg to differ. Also, from 2008-2010, he averaged 23 home runs a season. However, that's about all the power that Kubel has displayed in his career thus far. Either way, Kubel will find himself a starting role with some team in 2012.

Team: Minnesota Twins

Josh Willingham

2 of 7

In a less-than-average Oakland Athletics lineup last season, Josh Willingham hit 29 home runs and drove in 98 runs. He had the potential to become one of the top power hitters in MLB, but never was able to put it all together.

Willingham hasn't proven that he can hit for a high average, and that's one reason why he isn't getting too many looks from teams around the league. His 150-strikeout total in 2011 isn't all that appealing either.

Team: Oakland Athletics

Michael Cuddyer

3 of 7

Although Cuddyer isn't known for his power, he earned that title in 2009 when he smacked 32 home runs for the Minnesota Twins. However, it was eight more home runs than his previous career-high, and he hasn't come close to eclipsing that mark since.

In 2011, it wasn't Cuddyer's best power year, but it was probably his best all-around season as a hitter. His .284 batting average and 20 home runs showed teams that he has the capability to be a well-rounded hitter. Cuddyer can also play multiple positions in the field so that will only add to his worth.

Carlos Pena

4 of 7

Carlos Pena has a tremendous amount of power, and plays above-average defense at first base, but that's about all you'll get from him. Pena has hit at least 28 home runs in each of the past five seasons, but also struck out over 140 times. He is the definition of a "swing for the fence" type of player.

However, Pena does have the uncanny ability to get on base despite his career batting average of .239. For example, Pena bated .225 last year for the Chicago Cubs, but also had an OBP .357.

Team: Milwaukee Brewers

Carlos Beltran

5 of 7

Carlos Beltran was once considered to be one of the premier five-tool players in MLB. However, at age 35 and a track record of nagging injuries, Beltran is having trouble attracting attention from teams in need of a bat. It's been three years since Beltran has played an entire season, and that's when he hit 27 home runs and drove in 112 runs for the New York Mets.

Beltran has the capability to turn a decent offense into a threat. This is why Beltran will get a hefty three-year contract at some point this offseason, injuries or not. However, the Giants have already stated that they no longer have any interest in re-signing him, so expect him to take his talents to Boston.

Team: Boston Red Sox

Aramis Ramirez

6 of 7

Aramis Ramirez is the free agent that should be getting way more attention than he's getting. He started off the season slow in 2011, but then went on an absolute tear and finished with a .306 batting average and 26 home runs. With the exception of 2009, Ramirez has hit at least 25 home runs in his last eight seasons That's what you call consistency.

On top of that, he's only struck out 100 times once in his career, and that was in 2001 during his first full season in the majors. For any team looking for a legitimate third baseman, Ramirez would certainly be a coveted acquisition.

Team: Milwaukee Brewers

Prince Fielder

7 of 7

Prince Fielder was probably the happiest man in the world to see the Albert Pujols signing go down. Now Fielder is the center of attention in the free-agent market. All the teams who missed out on Pujols will turn their attention to Fielder, who is probably seeking a contract somewhere near the $200-million mark.

When you think power, Fielder should be one of the first to come to mind. He throws every ounce of his 275-pound frame into every swing he takes, which is exactly why he has hit over 30 home runs in six of his first seven years in the majors. He also has at least 100 RBI in each of his first seven seasons as well. At only 27 years old, Fielder will get paid this offseason. Look for the Seattle Mariners to be the team to pony up as well.
