Lakers Reportedly to Sign Free Agent Three-Point Specialist Jason Kapono

Joshua CarrollDec 7, 2011

Sure to be one of the free agent signings that flies under the radar, Jason Kapono will reportedly be signed to the Lakers later on this week.

For those who don't know who Kapono is, he is one of the better shooters in the NBA and played for the Philadelphia 76ers the last two years, averaging about six points.

A three-point champion in the past, defenses still respect his jump shot and are forced to know where he is at all times. This will surely take a little pressure off of Kobe Bryant, the only Laker we know will for sure be on the team on Christmas Day.

Kapono is 30 years old, but this shouldn't really effect his game play. He has never been considered an athlete by any means.

Standing at 6'8, he has never dunked in an NBA game, but he was a key component on the Miami Heat championship team in 2006.

Do not look to him for any defense, but he is a veteran with championship experience and the ability to get hot from behind the three-point line.

I'm sure Kapono is glad to be back where he grew up, attending both high school and college in Southern California.

After going to UCLA, he was drafted to the Cavilers and has played for his fair share of teams since that point.

Although he has not officially signed with the Lakers, he was at the practice facility today already sporting purple and gold.

Although I am not sure where he will find his minutes, competing with both Ron Artest and Matt Barnes at the small forward position, look for Kapono to hit a few big shots this season during the Lakers playoff push.

On Christmas Day, I am expecting to see a very different Laker team than what the roster says today. Clearly, Mitch Kupchak is already up there making moves.
