Why Ndamukong Suh Only Has Himself to Blame for NFL's Scrutiny in Car Crash

Ryan PhillipsDec 7, 2011

To say Ndamukong Suh has had a rough couple of weeks would be a gross understatement. To argue that he hadn't brought it upon himself would be foolish.

Suh is currently suspended for two games without pay by the NFL for his Thanksgiving day stomp on Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. This past Saturday morning, Suh then crashed his 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS after losing control of his car while attempting to pass a taxi in his hometown of Portland.

Two female passengers in Suh's car have claimed that the Pro Bowler was driving recklessly just before he hit a tree, a light pole and a drinking fountain. I don't know how you can hit all of those things if you're not driving recklessly, but that's beside the point.

Today we learned that the NFL is closely monitoring the fallout from the accident and the league plans to let the legal process run its course before deciding whether or not to take any action. I personally don't think anything will come of this in the form of punishment or an additional suspension or fine, but Suh should certainly be concerned.

The second-year defensive tackle has brought this upon himself with his reckless behavior on the field and now off it. After a slew of personal fouls and fines, he very publicly asked for a meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell in an attempt to help clean up his play. He then almost immediately stomped on Dietrich-Smith. Any good will he had gained from the public for asking for the meeting with Goodell went right out the window with his actions on Thanksgiving.

After his recent suspension, a rational person would have done whatever he could to be on his absolute best behavior on and off the field. Certainly driving recklessly and risking injury to himself and his passengers was idiotic at this point in his career. He deserves all the scrutiny he gets for his actions right now and if he doesn't clean things up in every aspect of his life he could face serious consequences.
