Lakers Rumors: Can LA Land Chris Paul on Package Centered Around Pau Gasol?

Matt ShetlerDec 7, 2011

Another day in the books and more rumors involving a potential Chris Paul trade are out there.

The latest have New Orleans showing interest in Golden State's Stephen Curry and the Los Angeles Clippers' Eric Gordon, but despite the Hornets' looking for young talent involving any deal for Paul, the Los Angeles Lakers still remain in contention to land the All-Star guard.

Although that their main package seems to center around Pau Gasol, the Lakers can still land Paul, but they can't do it alone.

It would be hard to fathom New Orleans willing to deal Paul for any package centering around Gasol who will turn 32 this season and struggled mightily in the second round of the playoffs a season ago.

While the Lakers likely would be willing to hang on to Andrew Bynum to use as a trade chip in a possible Dwight Howard deal, they just don't seem like they have enough to offer up for a talent like Paul.

One of the only realistic ways that the Lakers can land him is to get another team involved.

Find a team that could use a big man to make a run at the post-season, but a team that also has expendable younger players. That said team would see Gasol as having more value.

Then both the Lakers and that team throw other pieces and picks the way of New Orleans, and it would be a more attractive proposal than the Lakers just simply throwing a package centering around the veteran center.

Stranger things have happened, but it's just hard to think that the Hornets would jump at any Lakers offer with Gasol as the main chip.
