NBA Trade Rumors: Warriors, Clippers Throw Their Hats in Chris Paul Sweepstakes

Eric BallDec 6, 2011

It looks like Chris Paul is the new LeBron James.

Seemingly every team is trying to take a stab at the New Orleans Hornets' disgruntled point guard and now two more teams have entered the mix, according to Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski:

The visions of CP3 throwing alley-oops to Blake Griffin must be dancing through the head of Donald Sterling right now. Imagine how many Sportcenter highlights would be generated. The Clippers have enough talent and trade pieces to pull off a deal.  Wojnarowski believes the Clippers would have to send DeAndre Jordan, Al-Farouq Aminu, Eric Bledsoe and a 2012 first-round pick acquired from Minnesota to pull it off.

The Clippers on paper at least make sense.

The Warriors on the other hand…

It would make zero sense for Golden State to make a run at Paul. They already have Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis in the backcourt, and have to fill the gaping holes on the front line. They play no defense to speak of and are horrible at rebounding.

Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News reports that a deal to land Paul would involve one of their star guards:

Call me a skeptic of a Ellis-Paul backcourt running smoothly.  In addition to Curry, Wojnarowski believes Klay Thompson would be the other centerpiece in a potential deal.

Then there are the Celtics, who have been linked to Paul for the past week. It’s no secret their window to win is closing and giving up Rajon Rondo and potentially Jeff Green sounds good on paper. Yet, they would destroy the team’s unique chemistry for the second year in a row and wouldn’t be guaranteed that Paul would sign an extension.

To throw an even bigger monkey wrench into all of this, reports claim that Paul would strongly consider joining whatever team Tyson Chandler lands on. The two were a game away from the Western Conference Finals in 2008 and played together for three years in New Orleans.

The Chris Paul madness is in full swing and who knows what other teams are going to throw their name into the sweepstakes.

This is the summer of 2010 all over again, minus an hour-long show called “The Decision.”
