Heisman Finalists 2011: Is Robert Griffin III a Lock for Nation's Top Honor?

Alex KayDec 6, 2011

Robert Griffin III is going to win the 2011 Heisman Trophy Race by a mile.

RGIII has lead the Baylor Bears to a very respectable 9-3 record and a No. 12 ranking in the BCS standings going into their bowl game. He’s done it with his arm and leg and proved he is one of the most unstoppable college players in recent history.

The Bears QB threw for an amazing 3,998 yards and 36 TDs with just six interceptions. The even more incredible part is that he needed just 267 completions to reach those numbers. His 72.4 completion percentage and 192.3 QB rating are phenomenal.

On the ground, Griffin ran 161 times for 644 yards and punched in nine more scores.

Of all the players nominated, RGIII has easily been the best. The only player that I would have predicted to beat him is Houston’s Case Keenum, but for some reason he was snubbed from the final five altogether.

Had Keenum led the Cougars to an undefeated record, I think he would have been the obvious choice to win the most prestigious award, but the loss to Southern Miss absolutely crushed his chances.

Instead, Griffin gets the nod for turning the Bears around and making them relevant in one of the top two conferences in football.

He was put on the map after that thrilling victory against TCU to start the season and then followed through on that promise by totaling up over 500 yards of offense against Oklahoma and just performing solidly throughout the course of the season.

I see no way that Andrew Luck, Trent Richardson or Tyrann Mathieu can catch him. The only player invited to New York that has a shot is Montee Ball.

Ball, of the Wisconsin Badgers, has put up a Barry Sanders-esque amount of touchdowns and only needs two touchdowns to pass the Pokes legend for the single-season FBS record.

If the Badgers hadn’t dropped games to Michigan State and Ohio State, he would have been a lock.

Instead, Griffin is the man who will be awarded the Heisman and that is no surprise after his stellar season.
