Cam Newton Compared to Matt Ryan. Plus, a Tim Tebow Bonus
In the investment world they always say to beware of the "next" anything. But in the NFL, it is helpful and fun to compare young players with memorable former players.
Cam Newton, of the Carolina Panthers, really worried me at the combine. He couldn't throw even the shortest out routes. It was obvious that he thought so much of himself that he didn't think he needed to prepare. This was a serious red flag for me and there is no way I would have drafted him.
Now, well into the season, it is a totally different story. I think everyone can see that something comes over Cam during a game and he plays like a pro that will dazzle fans for years.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
His arm strength is second to none and his ability to see the field is amazing for a rookie. All of his gifts, including his ability to run, can lead him in two directions.
If he keeps his ego in check he could be like Steve Young, and if he doesn't he will be like the mercurial Michael Vick.
Matt Ryan is a smart and solid quarterback. If he puts in a lot of practice time like Peyton Manning, he could have a career like "Field General" Bob Griese. Ryan has everything but arm strength for deep routes.
He needs to get back to roll-out pass plays until his offensive line gets better. He also needs help from his running game.
In comparison, Matt Ryan will always be more reliable and dependable. Cam Newton is gifted and dazzles, but I don't think he will ever put the necessary time in to be a great quarterback.
As for Tim Tebow and the media's over exposure of him, I think he is a throwback to the tough days of football.
He reminds me of Paul Hornung of the old Green Bay Packers. He is a tough runner that has small, fat hands that throw "ducks." His passes sometimes get there but they rarely look pretty.
If I had a draft pick for either of the three, I would take Matt Ryan without hesitation.
