Week 14 Waiver Wire: Identifying the Biggest Boom-or-Bust Adds

Chris TrapassoDec 6, 2011

If you're searching for waiver wire pickups now, you more than likely advanced to your fantasy football league's postseason.

I made the playoffs in one of my leagues, the greatest accomplishment in 2011 for me.

Anyway, the real season has just begun.

Maybe you made the postseason as a conservative owner, or you took risks, added, dropped then re-added Roy Helu and never had no regrets.

Time to identify the biggest boom-or-bust adds as we enter the fantasy football playoffs.

- Marion Barber is the headliner in this category.

With Matt Forte out for "2-to-6" weeks, Barber is the default feature back for an unraveling Bears' club that squares off against a Broncos' run defense that allows more than 120 ground yards a game.

Will the former Dallas Cowboys back run wild against a below-average Denver defense, or will his production be hindered by stacked boxes that are the result of shaky play from Caleb Hanie?

He should still get nearly all of the goal line carries, though.

The definition of a risky acquisition.

- Is Demaryius Thomas worth an add? Another tough one. The Broncos' opponents have focused on limiting Eric Decker over the last few weeks and Thomas finally made the most of his opportunity with single coverage on Sunday.

He had four catches for 144 yards and two scores against the Vikings.

Will this continue? Is Tebow improving as a passer, or was his solid performance the result of playing the Vikings' shaky secondary?

Answer those questions and you've got your decision whether to add Thomas or not.

To me, Thomas is the epitome of a "boom-or-bust" guy, but I wouldn't be surprised if he finishes the season with some good fantasy numbers, because Tebow should "improve" playing against some suspect secondaries down the stretch. (Patriots, Bills)

- Lastly, Malcolm Floyd is another guy with the "boom-or-bust" label. He definitely possesses the big play ability. The Chargers are still a long shot to make the playoffs, but remember that they're a ridiculous 19-1 in their final four games since 2006 and Philip Rivers will feverishly throw the ball all over the lot during his team's last push for the postseason.
