Why Green Bay Coach Tom Clements Is Making a Mistake to Apply for Penn State Job

One of the biggest stories to get lost this week is the search for the next Penn State football coach. According to sources, current Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements has submitted his resume to the committee for consideration.

Even though he is a Pennsylvania native, this hire would be atrocious.

From a football standpoint, Penn State is not the best fit for a quarterbacks coach. The program was built around tough defense and is widely considered “Linebacker U.” Staying true to what built the program should be a priority.

Obviously Clements would be able to bring in some new offensive talent, but what about the defense? You can’t win in the Big Ten without good defense.

While not many of us know Clements personally, it is hard to see why he would want to come down to the collegiate level when his stock is in such high demand in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers is having one of the greatest seasons in NFL history, and he should at least get looked for an offensive coordinator position somewhere in the league, possibly even a head coaching job.

The value of a quarterback is at an all-time high, so the prospect having a guy like Clements on the staff will be sure to bring out a lot of offers from teams.

But the biggest reason why he shouldn’t be applying for Penn State is that he has never been a head coach before.

He would not have been able to handle the job even when everything was actually happy in Happy Valley. With all of the fallout from the Sandusky trial, the job has become infinitely more challenging.

The university needs to be looking at coaches with head coaching experience and not an NFL positions coach.

College football would love to have Clements become a head coach somewhere, but right now, taking a job at Penn State would just not be the best move for him or the university.
