BCS: The 5 Most Ridiculous Outcomes This Year

Manik AggarwalDec 6, 2011

This season has further proved how ludicrous this BCS system is. After a series of questionable calls and decisions, this might be the tipping point needed in changing the way college football handles the postseason.

Here are the five most foolish outcomes of the BCS this year.

1. The BCS Standings in General

In all other sports, the final standings determine playoff standing and playoff games. The BCS has a mind of its own.

In all, there are five BCS bowls, so technically, the top 10 teams in the BCS rankings should be playing a bowl game, but this year, No. 11 Virginia Tech, No. 13 Michigan, No. 15 Clemson and No. 23 West Virginia made BCS bowl games.

Therefore, four teams (Arkansas, Boise State, Kansas State and South Carolina) in the top 10 did not. This is a joke.

2. Boise State

This is simply comical. This was a one-loss team ranked in the top 10 of the BCS the entire season.

Their only loss was against a TCU team at home after a missed field goal. Somehow, regardless of at-large bids and conference bids, Boise State was placed in the MAACO Las Vegas bowl against Arizona State, a game slated for Dec. 22.

Are you serious?

This is a solid all-around team that has a Heisman-snub at quarterback and one of the best coaches in the country. It is a shame not to see this team playing in a BCS bowl.

3. ACC

Two teams from this weak conference somehow squeezed into the BCS bowls. How is it possible for Clemson and Virginia Tech to contend for the Orange and Allstate Sugar bowls, respectively, when teams like Boise State, Kansas State and Baylor are on the outside looking in?

The ACC is widely regarded as a poor conference, and Virginia Tech has supported that over the last many years in its previous BCS games. To add fuel to the fire, a three-loss Clemson team made a BCS bowl.

4. Meaningless Bowl Games in January

Playing in January means that a team has separated itself from the rest of the country.

It is a source of pride and accomplishment, and there is no reason that the BBVA Compass Bowl and the GoDaddy.com Bowl (how ridiculous does that even sound) featuring SMU, Pittsburgh, Arkansas State and Northern Illinois should occur on Jan. 7 and 8, respectively.

There is a reason that bowl games start on Dec. 17, and these two games should be in early December, rather than as an appetizer for the BCS championship game.

5. Rematch

LSU and Alabama playing each other again for a national championship has been criticized greatly by fans all over the country (outside of Bama).

I believe Bama was rightfully picked over Oklahoma State, and my thought process can be read here from a previous post.
