Lakers Rumors: Jason Kapono? Really Mitch?

William Van NollDec 5, 2011

On Monday, the first day to officially court players in free agency, the Lakers invited Jason Kapono to their El Segundo practice facilities.

The UCLA graduate may have simply been back in town and invited for a brief tour around the lot, but given Kapono's skill set, shortcomings on defense, and his 5.7 minutes per game average last season, let's hope the tour stops there.

Acknowledging that three-point shooting is a weakness the team must address, Kapono is a real waste of a roster spot, even if the Lakers offer him the veteran's minimum.

For one, the prospects of having both Luke Walton and Jason Kapono—great college players but mediocre pros—on the same bench is more than Laker fans can bear.

Kapono's been a journeyman his entire career, playing for six NBA teams in eight years. He is clearly not prized by any organization, and the last thing the Lakers need is another slow, one-dimensional small forward.

What's more, a cheaper and much better option from three-point land lies in the Lakers' second-round draft pick Andrew Goudelock.

Goudelock shot 40.7 percent from downtown his final year at the College of Charleston and won the NCAA's three-point contest last year. The kid has unbelievable range.

While he's no lock to make the roster, Goudelock's youth, speed, scoring ability and depth to the backcourt make him a more enticing sharpshooting option than Kapono.

Let's hope Kapono's visit to Lakerland is a one-and-done arrangement and Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak focuses on those "other" deals you may have heard about.
