Chargers vs. Jaguars: Troubled Jags Must Think About Finding Another QB

Ryan RudnanskyDec 6, 2011

Blaine Gabbert may be a rookie, but he's already showing that the Jacksonville Jaguars should start looking for another quarterback.

The No. 10 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft was simply bad against the San Diego Chargers on Monday night, going 19-of-33 for 195 yards.

Despite the fact Gabbert threw two touchdowns, he was a poor quarterback for most of the game and had some truly awful throws.

Sure, quarterbacks need time to develop in the big and bad world of the National Football League, but Gabbert isn't exactly developing this season, either.

In 10 games, Gabbert has thrown eight touchdowns to seven interceptions and is completing under 50 percent of his throws. At this point, he looks worse than Minnesota Vikings rookie Christian Ponder, and Ponder was considered a reach at No. 12 overall in the draft.

There are some avenues for the Jaguars to pursue. They have the opportunity to draft a top quarterback prospect in the next draft, or they can think about trying to trade for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who could be on the trade market with the Colts likely to draft Stanford's Andrew Luck at No. 1 overall.

There is the thought that Gabbert doesn't have many weapons to throw to on offense and that drafting a top receiver would change everything for him.

But what we saw on Monday night was not simply a quarterback without options; he made several poor throws to open receivers, rarely went downfield, apparently lacked a connection with his receivers, and never looked comfortable in the pocket.

Simply put, as the No. 10 overall pick in the draft, he should be playing much better. St. Louis Rams second-year quarterback Sam Bradford was given virtually no options in 2010 as a rookie, and he still made an impact in the NFL.

Gabbert should be trying to prove he should have been selected before Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, but he looks miles apart from the surprising Newton at this point.

The Jaguars need some indication that Gabbert will lead them in the right direction, and he gave them the wrong signal on Monday night.
