Villarreal vs. Napoli: Complete Preview, Live Stream, Start Time and Schedule

Josh MartinDec 5, 2011

Villarreal and Napoli will resume their European hostilities on Wednesday in their UEFA Champions League Group A finale. The Yellow Submarine will look to play spoiler to the Blues' hopes of advancing to the knockout round while giving their supporters something to show for the team's paltry performance in European competition.

Napoli, on the other hand, would like nothing more than another win to secure a spot in the top-two of its group alongside Bayern Munich. The spunky contenders from Italy's Serie A shut out Villarreal in their last meeting, but were eliminated from the Europa League by the Yellow Submarine back in February.

Player to Watch for Villareal: Cani

Villarreal have scored all of two goals in the Champions League this season, one of which came off the boot of Cani. The 30-year-old Spanish midfielder has been one of the few bright spots for the Yellow Submarine in European competition and will need to keep firm control of the ball if his club is to have any chance of upsetting Napoli.

Player to Watch for Napoli: Edinson Cavani

Few players have been as electrifying in the UCL thus far as Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan striker has notched four goals in European play, including a double in the Blues' victory over Manchester City last time out. Expect Cavani to get on the board once or twice in Spain, with the help of Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik.

Key Matchup: Cavani and Hamsik vs. Villarreal's Rear Guard

Simply put, Cavani and Hamsik have performed spectacularly in the Champions League, albeit at the expense of their squad's chances back in Italy. Each put through a goal against Villarreal's back line in their previous affair at the Stadio San Paolo. Villarreal's only hope of winning this fixture revolves around their ability to play "keep-away" from Cavani and Hamsik and hope their defence can stand up to the two young stars when possession shifts.

What They're Saying:

Napoli may soon add insult to the injury of dropping Villarreal for a second time this season. According to ESPN Soccernet, the Blues may pursue 24-year-old striker Giuseppe Rossi over the summer, a move to which Rossi would be receptive. Federico Pastorello, Rossi's agent, discussed the possibility with Radio Kiss Kiss:

"

"Rossi to Napoli? It's normal that Napoli would be considered as they are great club and many players, Rossi aside, would like to join them because they are doing well in the Champions League. Also, Napoli have the advantage of now being able to attract top players in the transfer window compared to the past."

"

Napoli are unlikely to go after Rossi in January, as he's still recovering from a torn ACL.

Prediction: Napoli 2, Villarreal 0

Napoli will play with their hair on fire to ensure that they move on to the knockout stage of the Champions League. As such, expect more of the same brilliance from Cavani, Hamsik and Lavezzi while Villarreal crawl home without a single point in Europe or even so much as a shot at the Europa League.
