NBA Rumors: Golden State Warriors Look to Make Splash by Nabbing Tyson Chandler
The Golden State Warriors would be very wise to add Tyson Chandler, a defensive-minded beast of a center, to their roster.
As an unrestricted free agent, he is hoping to return to Dallas first and foremost to try and repeat as an NBA champion with the Mavericks, but he might receive more money elsewhere.
Negotiations are also at an impasse, and he isn’t confident they will get anything done. "I really think I'm going to be on a new team come training camp,” Chandler said last Wednesday.
The Warriors are one of the teams hoping to land him and are willing to offer a fat contract to make that happen.
Golden State has been known as a team of gunners that shoot without conscience and forget to play defense. Longtime coach Don Nelson instilled that attitude, and it was tough for them to shed under Keith Smart.
Mark Jackson was recently hired to coach, and his first priority is to get his players defending. There would be no easier way to do that than by putting a defensive coach on the floor.
Chandler vocally organized the defense in Dallas and inspired them to hustle on that end of the court. It obviously worked, and they smothered even the toughest opponents on their run through the Finals.
He would also gel perfectly with Steph Curry, Monta Ellis, David Lee and rookie sniper Klay Thompson. These guys all can put the ball through the hoop but need help containing their opponents.
The size (7’1”, 235 pounds) and strength that Chandler adds is also impressive.
No one has a problem driving on a stiff like Andris Biedrins, the center that Golden State currently uses.
But they will think twice before going up against Chandler when he’s patrolling the paint.
Let’s see if the new ownership group in northern California is willing to open their wallets to actually contend in the West by making a serious run to swoop Chandler from Dallas.
It’s a perfect fit.
