NFL Power Rankings: Identifying the Biggest Surprises From Week 13

Zach KruseDec 5, 2011

The following are the biggest surprises we saw in Week 13 of the NFL season:

Cowboys Lose to Cardinals in OT

Jason Garrett obviously wasn't trying to ice his own kicker, but the timeout he took as the play clock was running down essentially had the same effect. But the real mistake made in the Cowboys' loss on Sunday was in time management, as the Cowboys could have given themselves a chance to get closer by calling a timeout with 24 ticks left.

Once in overtime, the Cardinals called a well-designed screen that ended it. The Cowboys still hold a division lead in the NFC East, but they blew a golden opportunity to gain a two-game grasp on the top spot.

Dolphins Blowout Raiders

I think we could all see that Sunday's trip to Miami wasn't going to be easy for Oakland, but I doubt many picked the Dolphins to blowout the once 7-4 Raiders. At the same time, the Raiders were being beat down by 20 points, the Denver Broncos were kicking a game-winning field goal in Minnesota to take over the division lead in the AFC West.

With a game upcoming in Green Bay, the Raiders have put themselves in playoff trouble.

Falcons Can't Beat Rookie QB

I wasn't the only one who thought the Falcons had a real chance to go to Houston and beat a Texans team without their top two quarterbacks. Matt Ryan really played poorly, however. He threw two picks and completed under 50 percent of his passes. He went to Roddy White 15 times, but completed just four of those throws.

That simply won't get it done, even against a rookie quarterback making his first NFL start like T.J. Yates. Ryan needs to be considerably better for the Falcons to get to the playoffs.
