Week 14 Waiver Wire: Maurice Morris and Others You Must Add

Andrea HangstDec 5, 2011

If you're looking for help when it comes to fantasy football waiver wire recommendations this week, then a congratulations is likely in order—you're going to the playoffs.

Unfortunately, injuries don't take a break as the fantasy postseason approaches, nor does it change the fact that you may be disappointed with your wide receiver corps or have yet to find that one missing piece that would make your roster unstoppable.

With that in mind, here are four top waiver wire additions for Week 14.

RB Maurice Morris, Detroit Lions (vs. Minnesota Vikings)

1 of 4

Oft-injured Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith re-aggravated an ankle injury that's been bothering him the last couple of weeks, meaning that, yet again, Maurice Morris will be seeing the majority of the team's carries.

Upon Smith's exit in Week 13, Morris managed 28 yards on 12 carries and caught five passes for 47 yards and a score. On the year, he has rushed 67 times for 268 yards and a touchdown and has 24 receptions for 217 yards and one score.

The 27th-ranked Minnesota Vikings defense is up next for Morris, boding well for his chances to have yet another solid, if not flashy, performance in Week 14. More valuable in PPR leagues than in standard ones, Morris is worth a start if you're in serious trouble at running back or want to take a risk as the fantasy playoffs commence.

WR Demaryius Thomas, Denver Broncos (vs. Chicago Bears)

2 of 4

Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas isn't the most consistent player worth picking up off of the waiver wire this week, but risks can often pay off.

The Broncos themselves took a major risk by installing Tim Tebow as their starting quarterback, but that has certainly been a smart move for the team, with Denver winning five straight games and six of their last seven with him under center.

Slowly but surely, Tebow is getting more comfortable throwing the ball, and no Broncos receiver benefited more in Week 13 than Thomas.

Thomas, who got a starting nod after fellow receiver Eddie Royal exited the game with a neck injury, caught four passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns and was targeted a team-high seven times.

So far this season, Thomas has just 11 receptions for 247 yards and three scores. With Denver's passing offense shifting on a weekly basis, Thomas is clearly a boom-or-bust waiver wire option. But as long as he's producing, he'll continue to be on the field as a viable option for Tebow.

All bets are off when assuming how the Broncos will perform against any given opponent, and the same can be said for the team's Week 14 matchup against the troubled Chicago Bears. If you're in trouble at wide receiver, there are far worse options for this week than snagging and starting Thomas.

RB Marion Barber, Chicago Bears (at Denver Broncos)

3 of 4

Things went from bad to worse for the Chicago Bears in Week 13, losing offensive leader and all-around workhorse back Matt Forte to a knee injury that may see him sidelined for the remainder of the regular season.

However, the Bears' loss can be your fantasy team's gain if you manage to snag running back Marion Barber off of the waiver wire.

After Forte exited the game, Barber rushed 14 times for 44 yards. On the year, Barber has 76 carries for 281 yards and five touchdowns and has caught three passes for 18 yards.

It's not a lack of talent but the shortcomings of starting quarterback Caleb Hanie that may keep Barber's production down in the remaining weeks of the year. Hanie is such a low-grade threat in the air that opposing defenses are acutely aware that stopping the Bears from running is the key to beating the team.

Add to that the fact that Barber is of little use to the passing game, and it's clear he could struggle to gain many meaningful yards for your fantasy team in the coming weeks. However, as the newly-anointed primary running back on a run-heavy team, Barber is the top waiver wire add of the week.

WR Andre Roberts, Arizona Cardinals (vs. San Francisco 49ers)

4 of 4

If you're extremely hard up for production at wide receiver, then the Arizona Cardinals' Andre Roberts might be a good speculative waiver wire pickup in Week 14.

Roberts had his best day of the season in his team's Week 13 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys, catching six passes for 111 yards. He's caught 33 passes this year for a total of 419 yards, but has yet to score a touchdown.

Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb is suffering from a lack of targets this year, with star wideout Larry Fitzgerald continually seeing double coverage and No. 2 receiver Early Doucet not consistent enough.

That leaves just Roberts. Prior to Week 13, Roberts hasn't netted more than 55 yards per game, and that should be the ceiling in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers.

But you can't argue with reliability. Roberts has good hands and apparently good chemistry with his quarterback. For those desperate GMs who need to plug in a receiver this week, give Roberts a look. Especially if you have 12 or more teams in your league.
