NBA Free Agents: Jamal Crawford Would Regret Signing with New Jersey Nets

Eric BowmanDec 5, 2011

As NBA teams frantically prepare to sign free agents, the players up for grabs must make sure they chose the right team instead of the large contract. Jamal Crawford is a prime example of this, as he will be seeking a large pay day, but he would be very unhappy with a team like the New Jersey Nets

The New York Post is reporting that Crawford will speak with the Nets today, and while they will court him hard, Crawford has to realize there are far better options out there.

Sure, playing with Deron Williams would be fun, but if this veteran guard wants to win a title now, he's not going to do that with the Nets.

New Jersey, soon to be Brooklyn, has a long way to go before it become a serious threat in the NBA, however, with key offseason additions they'll be heading in the right direction.

You can't blame them for wanting to go after Crawford. After all, he is a scoring machine, would take pressure off of Williams and be a great mentor to Marshon Brooks.

Unfortunately, Crawford is at the point of his career where he doesn't have time for things like that because winning should be his primary focus.

The Nets need help all over, and adding just Crawford won't rescue them from the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

He may be coming off one of the worst seasons in his career, but there's no denying Crawford is clutch when it matters most, and for that, teams are lining up to get him.

The 11-year veteran is the top shooting guard available, and since his most recent team, the Atlanta Hawks, can't really afford him, the door is wide open for any team to sign him.

However, Crawford wants the big bucks. With the new CBA, several teams are going to be able to shell out the mega-millions that Crawford will demand.

The Nets will have the space, which is why Crawford may be enticed by them. Should he join them, he would, without a doubt, regret it every time he stepped on the basketball court.

Of course, he'll love the money in his bank, but he'd be sacrificing the bigger picture—a shot at a championship.

Crawford needs play this free agency period smart, and sign with a team that will help him win now.
