Donovan McNabb and Chicago Bears: Adding Veteran QB Won't Help Playoff Chances

Wes ODonnellDec 5, 2011

The Chicago Bears are in trouble and adding Donovan McNabb isn't going to help—at all.

On the heels of Jay Cutler going down with an injury, the Bears lost star running back Matt Forte to a reported MCL sprain in the loss yesterday to the Kansas City Chiefs.

While the injury to Forte is the most damaging outcome of the day, the fact that Caleb Hanie managed to score only three points against a Chiefs defense giving up an average of 22.3 points per game is disheartening. The fact that it happened in Chicago is even worse.

And now, after going through the waiver process unclaimed, veteran Donovan McNabb is being discussed internally at Bears headquarters.

According to Bears Insider John Mullin:

"

The Bears did not make a play for veteran Donovan McNabb  last week and did not discuss possibilities even after McNabb became an unrestricted free agent.

But with Caleb Hanie turning in his worst performance as a starter or backup, and Josh McCown not deemed ready enough after more than a week of orientation with the offense, sources told CSNChicago.com that the Bears will be in conversations Monday about bringing the longtime standout with Philadelphia in as Hanie’s backup.

"

McNabb was forced out Philadelphia in favor of Kevin Kolb two years ago. His next stop, Washington, ended when he was replaced with Rex Grossman and his time this year in Minnesota was cut short when he was benched for rookie Christian Ponder.

So, to recap, McNabb has been replaced by Kevin Kolb, Rex Grossman and Christian Ponder in the span of two years; is there really any hope for him being productive or even serviceable?

He led the inept Vikings offense to a 1-5 record this year with Adrian Peterson in the backfield. The Bears intention is obviously not for him to start if actually signed, but it is only a matter of time before they give him a shot if Hanie continues to perform the way he did on Sunday.

With Forte out of the lineup for a reported two-to-four weeks the Bears have very little to be excited about offensively. One thing McNabb has shown in the past two years is that he cannot carry an offense at all.

If Chicago thinks he'll be a help to Hanie they need to think again. Putting added pressure on the fourth-year QB will only make things worse. Rather than simply worrying about his opponents Hanie will also have the thought of losing his job in the back of his mind.

The Bears are in a bad place right now, but adding McNabb won't help at all.
