BCS Standings: Boise State Broncos and Teams Snubbed by BCS

T.J. McaloonDec 5, 2011

The BCS at-large selection can take any team that finishes at least with nine wins or in the Top 14 in the final BCS standings. They could have taken deserving teams like Baylor, Kansas State or Boise State. Instead, they went for a cash grab selecting a team like Virginia Tech.

No. 12 Baylor Bears

Baylor finished this year with the fifth-best passing attack in the NCAA and the sixth-best scoring offense. They are the highest three-loss team in the final BCS standings, however, they have won their last five games.

Those final five wins have seen them defeat then No. 5 Oklahoma in thrilling fashion 45-38 and No. 22 Texas in a dominating performance 48-24. If their defense could have played half as good as their offense this Baylor team would have been a lock as an At-Large bid.

However, because of their small fanbase, they were dropped to the Valero Alamo Bowl against the Washington Huskies.

No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State finished the highest in the final BCS standings, among eligible teams that could have been selected for a BCS game with two losses.

They have quality wins over Baylor and Texas but are being punished for their small fanbase and losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. That loss at Oklahoma State 52-45 was the smallest margin of victory that the Cowboys won by at home this year.

The Sugar Bowl should be between two fun and exciting teams in Kansas State and Michigan. That game would feature two rushing style quarterbacks in Michigan’s Denard Robinson and Kansas State’s Colin Klein.

Instead, we get to see Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl vs. Arkansas and Michigan vs. Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.

No. 7 Boise State Broncos

This will be the first year since the 2005-06 season where a non-BCS conference school does not make a BCS bowl game. Boise State did not win their conference, which placed them at the mercy of the selection committee.

Instead of taking a one-loss Boise State team, who dominated the SEC East Division champion Georgia Bulldogs to open their season. They opted for Michigan and Virginia Tech because of the big fanbases and the guarantee to sell out the Superdome in New Orleans.

If the Sugar Bowl wanted to go with two Top-10 teams in the BCS standings, they could have gone with Kansas State vs. Boise State. These two teams would have put on a great game.

However, that game would not have done big television ratings.

Boise State saw the writing on the wall before the BCS bowl games were announced. They accepted a bowl bid for the Las Vegas Bowl against the 6-6 Arizona State Sun Devils.

These three teams all were passed over by the BCS because of their small fanbases and their lack of drawing power. The BCS went for a cash grab by adding in Michigan and Virginia Tech. These games will sell out, and the television ratings will be high.

Let’s hope that the game isn’t over by the end of the first half, because of a Michigan blow out.
