Washington Redskins Need a Quarterback to Complete the Puzzle

Vandie BarnardDec 5, 2011

It's no secret that in today's NFL, a franchise quarterback is essential for a team to be a championship contender year in and year out. It is the all-important piece that determines a team's success or lack thereof.

A franchise is like a puzzle. You need the right pieces and they all need to connect in order to be complete.

Looking at the Redskins quarterback situation and once again watching a tough loss, this time to the New York Jets on Sunday, it's evident of the key piece the Skins need to find.

The chances of the Redskins making the playoffs this season are as good as Rex Grossman not turning the ball over in a game (eight straight games with an interception).

Rex Grossman is going to be...Rex Grossman, and nothing less. You're going to get a couple good plays out of him, and rest assured, you'll get a pile of bad ones.

During Sunday's game against the Jets, the defense played very well, and the game was very close despite the 34-19 final score. The Jets were able to get the ball deep in Redskins territory up 20-16 after they forced Grossman to fumble at the 9-yard line.

Grossman time and time again finds ways to lose games and has to be able to sense the pressure in the pocket. If you can't find someone open after the mental clock in your head hits three seconds, throw it away.

We saw Rex make a similar mistake in the Monday night game at the Dallas Cowboys earlier in the season.

The Redskins have a great defense, and improving offense line. They don't have the best group of receivers in the league, but a pretty good one with Santana Moss, Jabar Gaffney, Fred Davis and Leonard Hankerson (when he returns next season). The backfield also has Tim Hightower when he returns next season, and Roy Helu.

All that is missing is the quarterback position, the most important position in football. The focus for the offseason needs to be finding a franchise quarterback.

At 4-8 and games remaining against the Patriots, Giants, Vikings, and Eagles, the Skins have a solid shot at landing a high draft pick in next year's draft.

The Redskins have lacked a legitimate starting quarterback in quite some time. They have the right pieces but need the one all-important piece: the center piece. They need to find their franchise quarterback to complete the puzzle.
