WWE Raw Preview: 5 Things to Expect on the Raw SuperShow
WWE Raw will originate live from Tampa, Florida. As always, check back on Bleacher Report for the latest recaps, analysis and opinions.
The St. Petersburg Times Forum should be in for a good show tomorrow. A hot WWE Champion, a self-doubting wrestler who is supposed to be the face of the company, a surging pair of heels and the anticipated returns of Evan Bourne and possibly Triple H should make a for a hot program.
As with all wrestling programs, there are angles and feuds that need to advance while there is always a need for a few stars in need of the limelight.
Here are five things to expect from the show Tuesday night.
The Punk & Del Rio Feud Will Move Towards Conclusion
1 of 6CM Punk and Alberto Del Rio exchanged victories of the course of the past few months. The feud has been intersected into and out of other feuds as necessary. Regardless, this feud has been the top or near top feud for the past few months.
Del Rio defeated Punk at Summerslam and Hell In A Cell while Punk returned favor in a big win at Survivor Series in a match that some considered the best match of a memorable night. As such, this feud is due to move into its final motions.
Expect this feud be resolved either on Monday or else at Tables, Ladders and Chairs in a few weeks.
Speaking of which...
Hey, We Have a Pay-Per-View!
2 of 6The WWE has TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs scheduled in less then two weeks. The PPV will come from 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, MD.
There is already one match on the docket with Mark Henry defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Big Show. However, the match type stipulation has yet to be announced.
The WWE should be moving into a "hard sell" mode with time growing short. Expect a few matches to be announced with some of the ground work being laid for both CM Punk and Cena.
Given the short cycle remaining, it's logical the WWE could use existing feuds to solidify the card. If they are feeling audacious, we could see a new title feud begin rather shortly.
One should also expect them to put a little more "gusto" into the Pay-Per-View after the brilliant Survivor Series last month and the embarrassing buy rate that Vengeance produced.
The Reassertion of Awesome and Push To Perfection
3 of 6Del Rio has been the subject of a lot of speculation as of late. It's even reached the point where rumors say Vince McMahon has lost faith in general with Del Rio.
There may be some credence to this as Dolph Ziggler and The Miz both have been getting a push of as late. The Miz destroyed his partner R-Truth a few weeks ago and laid out John Morrison last week in the latter's write-off from the WWE Universe.
Ziggler, the current United States Champion, wrestled WWE Champion CM Punk in a match that absolutely tore the house down. Taking pride in the fact, he defeated "The Viper" Randy Orton (with a little help from Barrett) last week.
Both men have tasted the main event before with The Miz even going so far as to defeat Cena at WrestleMania 27. Both men are gifted heels and should return to the main event sooner rather than later.
Expect both men to get involved with Cena and CM Punk to lay the groundwork for future feuds with a possible benefit for Ryder as a result.
Cena Continues to Receive Character Development
4 of 6It was a subtle thing at first, but then began gathering the momentum of the hurricane.
Just before Survivor Series, Cena has been getting some needed character development. Starting in his hometown of Boston and continuing through Survivor Series, Cena has been playing second fiddle to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
His booking at Survivor Series had him play second fiddle to "The Great One" to the point where he was simply filler in the match against Awesome Truth.
Since then, Cena has been displaying signs of cracking. On "Piper's Pit," Roddy Piper gave him an open handed slap to wake him up to the fact he was losing the support of the fans. Cena grabbed "Hot Rod's" hand and looked as if he would destroy Piper. Instead, he quietly left the ring.
Whatever the personal journey that Cena's character has been on, it's been intriguing and breathed life into a character that has long since grown stale. Whether it leads to a heel turn or simply gives Cena a desperately needed edge to regain the support of a fan base that has fallen in love with CM Punk remains to be seen.
Regardless, expect this angle to continue on Monday night.
CM Punk Continues to Clown John Laurinatis
5 of 6Part of CM Punk's recent popularity has been the continued fact he is a phenomenal pain in the butt.
Last week, John Laurinatis presented a stipulation that if CM Punk was intentionally disqualified, he would lose the WWE title to Del Rio in their rematch. Punk, being Punk, embarrassed Del Rio and the Interim Raw General Manager after using an exposed turnbuckle to assist in a Go To Sleep while the ref's back was turned.
Personally, I don't like Laurinatis from a TV character standpoint. But I do like the developing dynamic between him and Punk. This has given a good boost to the storyline development on Raw and given a good one-two punch with Cena's developing Self-Anxiety storyline.
This should allow, if the creative team needs, a good lead-in to a Punk/Miz or Punk/Ziggler feud while Cena gets the other heel for Tables, Ladders and Chairs.
Expect Punk to continue to out draw the former Johnny Ace on Raw, much to "Funkman's" consternation.
Left Field Calls
6 of 6This is where I make random calls because I can.
Air Boom drops the Tag Team titles. It seems logical that creative team wasn't very happy with Evan Bourne getting suspended while they were using him and Kofi to revitalize a fallen Tag division. Both were getting a very visible push. What happened with Evan was never given a cover story by the WWE on TV.
As a result of Evan's suspension, Kofi has been fairly listless over the past month. He was given an spot on Team Orton during Survivor Series but looked far from impressive. Kofi even took a pin against Primo last week on Superstars. As such, there remains the possibility the WWE will shift focus from Air Boom over to a new team like Primo and Epico.
Ryder gets the US Title. If the WWE is really looking to move Ziggler to the main event seen, he does not need a middle card strap. As such, the feud could come ahead soon.
Triple H makes Nash remember who he is. With a sledgehammer in all likelihood. A lot depends on how committed the WWE is to the feud. If they set up a match for TLC, they need to get moving on it soon.
