Tiger Woods: Woods Will Return to Prominence After Chevron Victory

Austin GreenDec 4, 2011

Tiger Woods won his first tournament in two years, and I think he'll use this performance as a springboard to return to dominance.

Woods ended his two-year drought with a one-stroke victory over Zach Johnson on Sunday.

Woods, who was at or near the top of the leader board throughout the tournament, birdied his last two holes to seal the win.

It was the first tournament he has won since his personal life came crashing down in November 2009.

Since then, he's dealt with some obvious mental demons on the course.

His prior stranglehold on the world's No. 1 position was relinquished and he fell far down the rankings. In 2011, he earned a relatively minuscule $660,238, which was 135th on the tour.

I think this win was exactly what Woods needed.

Despite his recent struggles, it's obvious that his pure talent never left him. He went through a major slump, but let's not forget that this is the most fearsome and dominant golfer in the history of the sport.

The guy's career numbers (97 wins, 14 majors) are ridiculous—and he's only 35. Physically, he still has plenty left in the tank.

Paul Casey, who finished third in the tournament, summed it up perfectly.

"Tiger can have a long career," Casey said. "We might look back in another 10 years and actually forget about the last couple of years."

With Tiger, I think his problems were purely mental. He conquered a major mental hurdle by winning this tournament, and I'm expecting him to build some momentum heading into next season.

For the first time in two years, Tiger Woods is confident and playing well. The rest of the PGA Tour should be terrified.
