BCS Rankings: Why Oklahoma State Should Be Ranked Ahead of Alabama
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are more deserving of a spot in the BCS national championship game over Alabama despite the fact it looks like we are getting a rematch.
Even though OSU and Alabama hold identical 11-1 records and the Cowboys' opponents' records (73-52) are 10 games better than those of the Crimson Tide (63-49), the BCS thinks a rematch of a game Alabama already lost is the best scenario.
Alabama has played Kent State, North Texas and Georgia Southern out of conference. Georgia Southern isn’t even a FBS team and the Tide gave up 21 points to that team.
I’m not going to even attempt to argue that the SEC isn’t the best conference in the nation because it's an impossible one to make, but you can’t dispute that Vanderbilt, Mississippi and Mississippi State are certainly nothing more than bottom feeders that roll out the mat to get whipped.
Alabama may have the No. 1-ranked defense in the nation, but I would count only three offenses (Arkansas, LSU and Auburn) that are actually considered potent.
Sure, it’s an incredible feat to hold opponents to 8.8 points after 12 games, but just remember their competition hasn’t been as spectacular as it appears.
The Cowboys sport wins over Texas, Baylor, Kansas State and Oklahoma…with the win over the Sooners coming by 34 points. Yes, they have the worse loss (Iowa State), but it was in double overtime with more than a few bounces that didn’t go their way.
We have already seen Alabama play LSU, and it couldn’t beat them in Tuscaloosa. The Tide had their shot, so why not give the next team in line a chance?
It would be the ultimate offense vs. defense battle that adds all sorts of intrigue to the championship game. Now, we are left dissecting tape from a month ago and attempting to find angles where Bama may have an edge.
Yawn.
What the Cowboys' No. 2-ranked offense has been able to do this season is special and watching QB Brandon Weeden go up against the Tigers' defense is not going to disappoint.
We’ve already seen Bama-LSU…we don’t need another reminder the Tigers are better. Give us a game and a matchup that is much more intriguing and with a team that could pull off the upset.
