WWE News: WWE Officials Reportedly Considering Dropping WWE Spinner Belt

There are plenty of things about the WWE that I don’t like, such as the lack of lengthy World Title reigns, a disastrous Divas division and some awful announcing.

But at the very top of that list might be the current WWE Championship, which—although it no longer actually spins—fans often refer to as the “spinner belt.”

The belt looks cheap, tacky and like it was made by a child, and I know that many WWE fans share my sentiment. They hate the way the WWE Title looks, and they want to see it go.

Good news: That could be happening in the near future.

As seen last week, John Cena wrote on Twitter that he thinks the WWE Title should be changed. The Wrestling Globe reports that once again, there is talk within WWE of changing the look of the title. WWE has actually had a new design ready since late 2009 but haven’t changed it because the current replica belt is one of WWE’s best sellers.

It’s about damn time. 

I suppose that there are worse things than having the WWE Championship look like it was made by a third grader in art class. But if the guy who introduced the belt to the WWE and made it as popular as it is thinks it’s time to change the design, it probably is. 

Of course, sales of replicas of the WWE spinner belt are ridiculously high—I’d love to see those sales numbers, by the way—and WWE officials are probably hesitant about losing a big chunk of change if the belt isn’t on TV every week. But the company can still sell the replicas of the belt even once it’s retired. For all we know, the next WWE Championship belt could be a bigger seller than the spinner one. 

This is one of those situations where the WWE has to take a chance by getting rid of the spinner belt, putting something else in it’s place and then seeing what happens. 

I know a lot of fans want to see the old “winged eagle” design come back, and I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing CM Punk walk out with that around his waist one day. But if I’m deciding on a different WWE Title, I would come up with a completely new design. 

Given that the retro, all-white Intercontinental Championship was just brought back, the WWE doesn’t want to get into the habit of relying on things from the past to build a better future.
