Cotto vs. Margarito: Miguel Cotto Has Earned Second Shot at Manny Pacquiao

Nicholas GossDec 4, 2011

After Miguel Cotto knocked out Antonio Margarito on Saturday, he has proved that he deserves a second shot at Manny Pacquiao.

After Cotto's decisive win Saturday, there is no question that he could give Pac-Man a run for his money.

Pacquiao did not perform well in his last fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. Marquez should have won that fight, and he put up a fantastic effort.

Pacquiao did not look like the dominant fighter in that bout, and had to be on the defensive for most of it.

Cotto could certainly do well against Pacquiao. He is very confident coming off his big win against Margarito, a fight in which he really wanted revenge in.

Cotto also made adjustments during the fight, and was able to adapt and make sure he knew what to do to overcome his opponent when he saw exactly what he was up against.

It's possible that Cotto could fight Floyd Mayweather on May 5, a date Money May has said he wants to have a big fight on.

Many people in the sport of boxing, as well as fans, want Mayweather to fight Pacquiao next spring, but a Cotto fight would be epic too.

With the way that Pacquiao struggled with Marquez, fighting before a historic Mayweather fight could be a good idea. If Pac-Man fights against Mayweather like he did against Marquez, he will get dominated.

Regardless, Cotto has proved he is ready for another major fight, and a second shot at Pacquiao. Cotto is ready for the challenge, and given Pacquiao's form lately, it would be surprising to see him give Pac-Man all he can handle and more.
