Cotto vs Margarito 2: Cotto Deserves Rematch with Manny Pacquiao

Austin GreenDec 4, 2011

After destroying Antonio Margarito Saturday night, Miguel Cotto proved that he deserves a rematch with Manny Pacquiao.

Granted, he'll probably get annihilated by Pacquiao again, but that's not the point.

Cotto was dominant in his rematch with Margarito. He executed his game plan to perfection, constantly landing blows to Margarito's infamous right eye.

The referee stopped the fight after the ninth round, when Margarito was half blind.

Most great rivalries deserve a third bout, but that's not the case here. Cotto clearly showed he was the better fighter and he needs to move on to other challenges.

That means a rematch with Pacquiao.

The two fought in 2009, when Pacquiao won by 12th round TKO.

Pac-Man destroyed him for most of the fight, knocking him down with a right hook in the third round and again with a left uppercut in Round 4.

Cotto's face was bloodied and swollen after the ninth round, and many thought that his corner should have thrown in the towel.

However, they let him continue. It proved to be a poor decision, as he was severely beaten for the duration of the fight. The referee stopped it 55 seconds into the 12th.

Still, despite taking a savage beating, Cotto had a few promising moments. He won the first and fifth rounds and had success when he pinned Pacquiao on the ropes.

It's highly unlikely that he would win the rematch, but Cotto proved Saturday that he at least deserves a shot.
