Cotto vs. Margarito: Impressive Pounding Proves Miguel Deserves Title Shot

Richard LangfordDec 4, 2011

Miguel Cotto showed he is still an elite fighter that needs another chance at the title.

Cotto retained the WBA Super Lightweight title with this fight, but he is ready to go for a higher profile prize. And that means either a bout with Floyd Mayweather or a rematch with Manny Pacquiao.

Cotto was on top of his game and looked as good as ever. His feet looked quick and his punches were accurate.

He spent much of the fight backpedaling and landing bruising left hooks as Margarito charged toward him. The punishment resulted in the refs stopping the fight after the 10th round.

Cotto's Resume

Cotto improved his record to 37-2. He has just one bad loss on his resume. That was the TKO he suffered to Manny Pacquiao just over two years ago.

Since then Cotto has rebounded nicely. He is 3-0 and has won all fights via TKO.

Next Opponent

Cotto could be staring at a fight with Floyd Mayweather. That would be more appealing than a rematch with Manny Pacquiao.

The big wrench in this plan is that Mayweather and Pacquiao may finally figure out a way to fight each other.

This would leave Cotto empty handed for the foreseeable future. In that case, a bout with Julio César Chávez Jr. would be a good option.

Chavez is the current WBC Middleweight champ and is 44-0-1. This would be a solid fight and draw.
