Cotto vs. Margarito: Antonio Margarito Stood No Chance Against Cotto
In a hard-fought bout between Antonio Margarito and Miguel Angel Cotto, Cotto proved he was easily the better of the two fighters.
Before the fight even took place, Cotto was the clear favorite (based on their results as of late).
Coming into the fight, Cotto had a whopping 37-2 record, with the losses to Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito. The loss to Margarito was a controversial one—Cotto arguably had the better of Margarito in the fight.
Margarito, on the other hand, came into the fight after struggling significantly to get wins. He lost two of his last three fights before this epic boxing duel.
One of the two losses included a TKO to fighter Shane Mosley in nine rounds. Mosley was the same fighter Cotto was able to beat.
In the second fight—between two of the better boxers in the sport—Cotto proved his worth and got the revenge he deserved. The numbers supported Cotto's dominance in the fight.
The key to his win was his ability to hit Margarito with a plethora of power shots—landing 148 of them in the bout. Cotto landed 43 percent of his 210 punches. He was destined to come out on top in this fight.
Margarito, on the other hand, landed just 22 percent, or 157 punches, in the match.
Cotto was also able to take advantage of Margarito's surgically repaired right eye; intense bleeding from the eye would ultimately give Cotto the victory. Yet, it was evidently a strategic move by Cotto—further proving his intelligence as a fighter and ultimate dominance in the fight.
Make no mistake about it, Miguel Cotto had the edge going into the match. He proved it was his fight to win by taking Margarito down.
