Why the Miami Dolphins Aren't Far from Being a Playoff Team

Jon DoveDec 4, 2011

The Miami Dolphins are only three key pieces away from being a playoff team.

All playoff teams have two things in common: good quarterback play and a strong coaching staff. These are two things the Miami Dolphins lack. Miami also needs to add another pass-rusher opposite Cameron Wake.

Matt Moore has done a decent job, but his upside is limited. The Dolphins need to add a quarterback who is capable of winning games on his own. They need someone that opposing defenses fear. This offense has enough pieces in place that a quarterback upgrade will allow them to contend.

The wide receiving corps features Brandon Marshall, Devon Bess and Brian Hartline. Marshall is one of the top receivers in the NFL. He is a big-play threat who also is effective over the middle. Bess and Hartline are excellent complementary pieces. They are capable of hurting a defense when they double Marshall.

Miami's running game also has some dynamic playmakers. The combination of Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas provides the offense with versatility. Bush is the home run hitter while Thomas does a good job running between the tackles.

A top-level quarterback would really be able to excel in this offense. He would have the support of a running game, and a legitimate No. 1 receiving target.

The Dolphins offense would also benefit from an upgrade within the coaching staff. Brian Daboll is a decent offensive coach, but this team needs a dynamic play-caller. Most playoff contending teams have coaches capable of winning the X and O battle. I don't feel that Daboll can consistently win that fight.

Defensively, the Dolphins need to find help for Cameron Wake. Wake is the only true pass-rushing threat on the defense. He is often double-teamed, which limits his effectiveness. The pass-rush would also help a leaky secondary.

Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is a coach the Dolphins can win with, especially if they give him better personnel.
