Cotto vs. Margarito II: Why Margarito Had No Chance to Win Rematch

Luis BatlleDec 4, 2011

Despite Antonio Margarito's victory in the first fight between him and Miguel Angel Cotto, Cotto is easily the better fighter than the two and proved it in his victory over Margarito in fight No. 2.

The icing on the cake came with a Cotto victory at Madison Square Garden. From the ring of the bell, Cotto had Margarito beat, both mentally and physically.

Cotto would go after his surgically repaired eye throughout the fight, as blood from the right eye would ultimately force the referee to stop the fight and declare Cotto victorious.

Prior to facing Margarito in the first encounter between the two fighters, Cotto came into the fight 32-0 while Margarito was just 36-5. Since then it is significant to note that Margarito has won just one of his last four fights and is starting to prove he is easily the weaker fighter of the two.

Cotto, on the other hand, has won five of his last seven fights, with the two losses coming to Margarito in July of 2008 and arguably the best there is in Manny Pacquiao back in 2009. Those are also his two only losses of his career, dating back to 2001 when he first began fighting.

Yes, that's just two losses in 10 years.

Margarito is certainly a great fighter make no mistake about it, yet there is no argument that he is a better boxer than Miguel Cotto.

Comparing the two fighters in terms of similar opponents and how they fared against each, again it is clear Cotto is the stronger fighter of the two.

Both lasted 12 rounds against Pacquiao despite losing, yet against Shane Mosley it was Margarito that was dominated. Mosley would go on to land 178 punches to Margarito's 108, while doubling Margarito in jabs landed as well.

Margarito is still 38-8 for his career, as he has proven his worth throughout his career, yet he is nowhere near the skill level of a fighter like Cotto. Cotto has the better record, has now beaten Margarito and dominated him in the revenge fight at Madison Square Garden.
