Oklahoma State Football: Cowboys Deserve to Face LSU in BCS National Title Game

Anthony PrestanoDec 4, 2011

Four missed field goals.

Had Alabama made half of the field goals they missed, LSU would be fighting for a spot in the BCS National Championship Game right now.  Alabama had their shot to make a statement, and they blew it.

They kept the game close throughout but could only muster up two out of six field-goal attempts.  You can't win ball games against the No. 1 team in the nation like that.

Now that Alabama had their chance, I think it's only fair that Oklahoma State gets theirs, too.

Here's why.

Oklahoma State lost a heart-breaker in Week 11 on the road to Iowa State.  Much like Alabama, they could not convert the field goals necessary to win the game.  An overtime loss on the road is the only thing keeping Oklahoma State from playing LSU right now, but I think they should anyway.

First off, Oklahoma State clearly had a tougher schedule this season.  They took care of Kansas State and Baylor, and they had a very impressive victory yesterday over Landry Jones and Oklahoma.

Beating the No. 5 team in the country is a statement in itself, but beating them by 34 points is a huge statement.

Alabama won only twice all season against Top 25 opponents—Penn State (not a very impressive team) and Arkansas.  The victory over Arkansas was impressive, but I don't believe it's enough to make as strong a case for the national title game as Oklahoma State.

I also believe that Alabama already had their chance, but they couldn't take advantage.  If you can't beat a team at home in one of the loudest stadiums in the country, how are you going to beat them in a neutral atmosphere with possibly more LSU fans than Alabama fans?

On top of all this, Oklahoma State won their conference in fashion by smoking No. 5 Oklahoma.  Alabama won their last game against an unranked Oklahoma and still couldn't win their conference.

You know that Oklahoma State and their fanbase have momentum, and they're ready to go.

After the horrible tragedy that occurred last month for Oklahoma State, they have passion and drive.  They have something to fight for, and I believe they deserve a shot on the biggest stage in college football to show what the're made of.  My heart goes out to all of those affected by the Oklahoma State tragedy.

All In all, I believe Oklahoma State should at least have their chance to knock off the top team in the nation—but more importantly, I think this year's BCS Title Game could change the future of college football.  It shows why there must be a playoff system instilled within the next few years.

Both teams are very deserving of playing for the title this season, and I don't think the BCS could make a wrong choice.  However, Oklahoma State receives my vote to play LSU this January.
