Cotto vs. Margarito 2: No Need for a Third Bout After Cotto Dominates
Miguel Cotto destroyed Antonio Margarito Saturday night, leaving no doubt about who the better fighter is.
Margarito's camp may call for a third bout between the two, but that's not necessary after Cotto's dominant victory.
Cotto bloodied Margarito for nine brutal rounds. He continuously landed blows to Margarito's infamous right eye, which was swollen by the third round.
In the seventh round, the eye closed completely and Margarito was screwed. He was getting beat down when he had both eyes, so he had no chance while half-blind.
Cotto punished him for a few more rounds, milking the victory that he wanted so badly.
Before the 10th round, the doctor stopped the fight.
"It came to the point there was no vision at all from the eye," ring doctor Anthony Curreri said. "I think it would have been dangerous for him to go out there without any visual field. He did go quite a bit with the eye impaired."
Cotto fought a perfect fight, executing his game plan with precision. He's never shy about his hatred for Margarito, and it was easy to see how much he enjoyed beating him.
Most great rivalries deserve a third bout, but I don't think that's the case here. Margarito needed to at least be competitive to justify his controversial win in 2008.
Instead, he was completely dominated for nine rounds.
Cotto proved without question who the better fighter is. Now he needs to move on to someone else.
