TUF 14 Finale Results: Michael Bisping Should Fight Chael Sonnen Next
Michael Bisping's second going in The Ultimate Fighter franchise garnered him more success than when he faced Dan Henderson.
Instead of being on the receiving end of knockout he was giving one and with it has pushed himself higher into the upper echelon of the UFC. The problem is, even with a win over Miller, he hasn't quite proven that he is up to par with the top of the division.
He needs to get that last attention-getting win in and with his mouth he should be able to do it, but he needs a foil. Someone who can be equally as antagonizing to fans and who rubs them the wrong way.
He needs to fight Chael Sonnen.
Both men are gunning for middleweight title shots and both have some merit to their claim.
Bisping has won four in a row.
Sonnen is the first man to almost beat Anderson Silva, the UFC middleweight champion, in years. He also has a win over highly regarded fighter and ex-Marine Brian Stann.
Sonnen already has a fight with Mark Munoz lined up on the second fight card on FOX, but Dana White could probably be flexible in getting to have Munoz bow out. After all, having to loudmouthed dynamos like Sonnen and Bisping who are as talented in the cage as they are at shooting promos would make for great TV.
And considering the card they would be on that would make it great free TV. It might sit with some viewers the wrong way, but if it could get enough eyeballs glued to the fight then more would probably walk away having enjoyed a good matchup and enough watching a "villain" of MMA get a good pounding.
But the biggest reason to make the fight is for the winner. Even if someone else in the division makes a better case for their shot at the title, the Bisping vs. Sonnen winner will get a better buy rate and at the end of the day the UFC is a business.
If both men decide to step in the cage with each other they will effectively cut off anyone else's chances at a shot at the gold and stamp their name on a top pay-per-view slot.
Plus, on a personal note, it would make journalists' jobs easier when trying to write articles for the fight.
