Cotto vs. Margarito: Mike Jones Poised for Welterweight Title After Dominant Win

In a fight that was as one-sided as they come, Mike Jones improved to 26-0 in a dominant victory over veteran Sebastian Lujan in an IBF Welterweight title eliminator match. The win means Jones continues to be one of the division's fastest-rising stars.

It also means that he is in the hunt for the IBF Welterweight title that was vacated by Andre Berto so he could pursue a fight with Victor Ortiz in another weight class.

While Jones hasn't faced the greatest level of competition, he is certainly one of the main contenders for the championship.

Jones absolutely battered Lujan throughout the match as the judges scored it 119,109, 119-109 and 118-110, all in favor of Jones. There was absolutely no question who the superior fighter was, as it was really a testament to Lujan that he was able to take it the distance.

Over the last couple rounds, Jones unleashed a number of vicious flurries on Lujan, and he appeared to be out on his feet on a couple occasions. The referee never stopped the fight, however, and Lujan was somehow able to remain on his feet and lose with some dignity.

With that win, it is now clear that Jones is ready to take on some of the upper-echelon fighters in the division. There is no question that he has the tools to be a legitimate champion, but he simply has to show them off against some better competition.

It's difficult to speculate on who that might be, but Jones is quickly becoming a hot commodity. Jones would certainly get a major boost if he could pick up a win over a name fighter such as Paul Malignaggi or Kermit Cintron at this point, and those type of fighters don't seem to be too far off for Jones.

While this win allowed Mike Jones to continue his pursuit of the IBF Welterweight title, it also established him as the real deal in the welterweight division.
