BCS Rankings: Overrated Teams That Will Get Destroyed in Bowl Games
The following teams are going to be bowl game victims of the rankings they do not deserve.
Their high ranking will land them in a bowl game where they are in over their head and they will consequently get throttled.
No. 19 Nebraska
Nebraska has been curiously over valued by the polls all season.
Nebraska's resume is ultra-thin. They have just one win that is anything to write home about. That was a 24-3 spanking of Michigan State.
This one-dimensional team offers just one other win over a ranked team. That was a 17-14 win over Penn State. And while that is a nice win, there should be an asterisk next to that one as it was against a distracted Penn State team playing their first game after the firing of Joe Paterno.
Those wins would be enough to warrant their ranking were they not incredibly outweighed by their ugly losses.
The Cornhuskers were humiliated by Wisconsin, 48-17. They then managed to almost equal that by getting blown out 45-17 by Michigan.
These blowouts point to Nebraska's massive flaws. This team has no passing game to keep defenses from keying on the run. And once their running game is shut down this team is doomed to failure.
Nebraska is 13th in the nation in rushing yards and 103rd in passing yards.
Compounding the problems this poses is the fact that Nebraska defense is very suspect. They are especially vulnerable to passing attacks, and this leads to them giving up points in bunches.
We will find out who Nebraska is matched up against in their bowl game, but whoever it is, it would be wise to pick their opponent.
No. 5 Virginia Tech
Don't let the Hokies sterling 11-1 record fool you. They have compiled that against teams they should easily beat.
The Hokies have not beaten a team ranked in the top 25. The one ranked team they have faced is Clemson and they were dismantled by Clemson 23-3.
The Hokies have a solid defense, but it is not dominant enough that it can compensate for their lack of offensive power to a great enough degree to warrant a No. 5 ranking.
The Hokies are 8th in the nation in points allowed. Remember, that number is skewed by their lack of stiff competition. Also skewed is their weak offensive numbers.
They are ranked 44th in points per game. They are just 66th in passing yards and 31st in rushing yards.
Orange Bowl or not, the Hokies are headed to a bowl game against a ranked opponent, and their is nothing here to suggest that they will not be blown out by that ranked opponent.
No. 11 Kansas State
Kansas State is a one-dimensional offense, and that dimension is not all that dominant. That is not a trademark of a No. 11 team.
The Wildcats are a rushing team. That is evident by the fact that they are 109th in passing yards. However, their run game is only ranked 29th in the nation. They average just 4.07 yards per carry.
Their defense is solid, but not at all dominant. They allow 3.92 yards per carry.
K State has a couple of big wins. They beat Baylor 36-35 and Texas 17-13.
However, they also have a couple of bad losses. Oklahoma State shredded their defense and won 52-45. They were also blown out 58-17 by Oklahoma.
Kansas State has shown they can put up points, but their prolific outputs have come against teams with weak defenses.
They have also shown that their defense can be destroyed by good passing attacks. That is bad news as they are likely to face a quality opponent in a high profile bowl game.
