Who's to Blame for Fans' Hatred Toward John Cena?

Nathan GieseDec 3, 2011

John Cena is the most polarizing figure in the WWE today.

This man can invoke more emotion out of a crowd than any other Superstar on the current roster. For years, he has been the most loved man in the business. Sure, he has had his haters throughout his career, but, for the most part, most of those haters weren't vocal about their hatred towards Cena.

Once The Rock came back and started to attack Cena for something he may or may not have said seven years ago, fans immediately jumped on the Great One's bandwagon again, abandoning the Cenation for someone who hasn't even been around for years.

There was no character change needed. The moment Rock mentioned he didn't like Cena, most of  Cena's fans began to hate him as well. All it took was one man to come in and spark up controversy against the company's face and suddenly Cena was the most hated man in all of professional wrestling.

He gets more heat than every one of the heels in the WWE today. Which, considering it is the intent for heels to get heat from the crowd, is awfully sad.

Now, on the surface, it's easy to point the finger at Rocky for making fans hate Cena. Except, it's not that easy.

There are more people involved with this fan rioting today than just simply The Rock.

If it's not solely Rock's fault for Cena's demise in the eyes of the fans, then who is?

The Rock

I put Rock first on the list because I already established he had a helping hand in making fans loath Cena to new heights.

Rock coming back to rip on Cena caused a massive uproar in the WWE universe. Rock has done such a great job of making Cena look like a chump that fans can't help but take his side in the battle of two legends.

Cena has had his shining moments in the feud as well, such as his rapping to get under Rock's skin, but he was instantly one up each and every time he had any sort of momentum in the matter.

Say all you want about people hating Cena before Rock came around. It's clearly evident to even the most casual of fans that as soon as Rock started bad-mouthing Cena, so did they.

Vince McMahon

Who's the man behind the curtain that makes all decisions on character ideas and builds?

Why, Vincent Kennedy McMahon of course.

It's no secret that Vince has been extremely high on Cena since day one. From his premiere as a wanna-be Eminem to today's class act with the motto of Never Give Up, Vince has given the a-okay every step of the way.

If there is one person who has more of a say over Cena's character than John himself, it's obviously the owner of the company. Vince is the one who wants John to be the man of the business and has done incredibly well in doing so for some time now.

It's no wonder why Vince is OK with John's character considering how immensely popular he is around the world. Why would he want to change what isn't really broken?

CM Punk and R-Truth

Cena's two biggest rivals throughout the Summer, R-Truth and CM Punk, were the first ones to really attack Cena for being the poster boy of the WWE. During their feuds with Cena, both Truth and Punk became two of the hottest commodities the WWE has to offer.

They have Cena to thank for that.

What made both of their feuds with Cena so compelling was the fact they both called him out for being THE face of the company. Truth started calling Cena's fans Little Jimmies, which to this day is one of the most ridiculously awesome catchphrases in wrestling history, and Punk called him out for getting the respect and attention that he deserved, not Cena.

Ironically, Punk and Truth were fighting the same battle against Cena, just at different times. Look at them now.

Punk is the next face of the company and R-Truth is by far one of the most entertaining men in the business.

If it wasn't for their attacks on Cena and how his character makes those who deserve more attention become afterthoughts, people that now hate Cena more than ever wouldn't have a leg to stand on. They would just be another example of the IWC not ever being happy.

It was these two Superstars who made all the griping about Cena valid, knowing that they were not alone in the thoughts.

PG Rating

4 of 5

Let's be honest. Other than John Cena, what is the biggest complaint we as WWE fans have?

Clearly, its the PG rating that haunts us all.

Since it switched over from TV-14 to PG in 2008, most of us have never been happy. No more blood, no more headshots, limited profanity and more children watching the shows, causing older fans to hate everything they love about the product.

Aha, the underlying problem with John Cena and the PG rating. Cena's character is perfect for PG because he's a real-life super hero to the kids. He does the right thing, he never backs down from a fight and always shows class while doing it. Adults, well they see that kids like Cena and immediately hate him because he caters to kids.

Wow, isn't that a little hypocritical of the adult fans?

Can they honestly say that when they were kids watching professional wrestling that they didn't cheer for the guy that seemed invincible? Were they not always waiting for the good guy to save the day from the evil man?

If you answered no to any of these questions, you are either lying or a complete sociopath.

Which brings me to this point. How can we as adults hate somebody just because kids love him? Yes, Cena has a huge children following, but so did Hulk Hogan—and look where he ranks among the greatest of all-time.

Adult fans just need to stop being so hypocritical when it comes to hating Cena because kids love him. It's just an idiotic argument.

John Cena

Sadly, the main person that can be blamed for fan's hatred toward Cena, is the man himself, John Cena.

What really makes his character so stale to most is the utter fact that he has the audacity to always be the good guy, to constantly say the right thing, to actually like to interact with the crowd, meet fans and encourage people to do the right thing in life.

How dare he do such a thing? Nobody has that big of a heart in real life, so why put in on television?

Well, by all accounts, the real life John Cena really does have as big of a heart as the company likes to portray on television and for public appearances. I have yet to see a single person say that John Cena is not the same exact man that we see on our TV screens each and every week.

My question to the public is this: Why is it so hard to believe that someone like John Cena is genuinely a great person, which may be the biggest reason why he hasn't had that infamous heel-turn yet.

That's it for me. What do you guys think?

Who is the main person to blame for fans hating John Cena so much?

Is it even a person at all?

Why is John Cena hated so much?
