Cotto vs. Margarito 2: Margarito's Career Will Be in Trouble If Eye Is Problem

Mick AkersDec 3, 2011

With the highly anticipated rematch between  Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito only hours away, one can't forget that the fight was almost called off due to the damaged eye of Margarito last week.

No one could forget the after-fight photo of Margarito's face after Manny Pacquiao went to town on it in their fight in November of last year.

With attention being paid to Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) and the health of his eye, it will be a tough road ahead for the junior middleweight fighter. There is a chance of life-altering damage and unfair stoppages by referees who feel his health could be in jeopardy if Margarito gets any kind of noticeable damage tonight against Cotto (36-2. 29 KOs), or in any fight going forward.

One could imagine that there will be some damage done to Margarito's eye tonight, as the two fighters hate each other and Cotto is looking for some revenge after their last fight was surrounded with controversy due to Margarito and his suspected illegally wrapped gloves.

If Margarito looks anywhere close to what he did against Pacquiao last year, it may not be Margarito's decision that stops fights, but the state's athletic commissions, as it may be tough to obtain licenses to fight for Margarito for future bouts.

No commission will license Margarito knowing that the damage they OK will help further an injury that Margarito will have to deal with for the rest of his life.

At the end of the day everyone knows what a warrior Margarito is, and there is no real chance that he will stop fighting on his own, which leaves the commissions and those around Margarito to handle the fate of a resilient fighter and his future in the ring.
