NFL Week 13 Picks: Buffalo Bills and More Tanking Teams to Avoid

Josh MartinDec 3, 2011

The losses are mounting for middle-of-the-road teams across the NFL, some of who have gotten into the habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory on a game-to-game basis.

Just ask these three teams, whose respective downward spirals are destined to continue in Week 13, much to the chagrin of their woebegone (and dwindling) fanbases.

It's all gone so horribly wrong for the Bills since their 4-1 start. They've dropped five of their last six games, including the last four in a row, with three of those losses coming by 16 points or more. Along the way, Buffalo has seen Ryan Fitzpatrick lose his magic touch after signing a fat new contract and Fred Jackson, at one time the NFL's leading rusher, blow out his knee.

Now, the Titans, this week's visitors to Ralph Wilson Stadium, hardly constitute a juggernaut themselves, but at least they have a competent quarterback (Matt Hasselbeck) and a healthy running back (Chris Johnson) ready to victimize a Bills team that ranks 22nd in total defense. Las Vegas likes Buffalo as 2.5-point favorites at home, but even the home crowd won't be enough to keep the Bills from dropping their fifth consecutive game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Our tour of terrible teams on pitiful losing streaks continues in Tampa Bay, where the Buccaneers will be fighting to stay out of the basement of the NFC South when they welcome the Panthers to Raymond James Stadium.

The Bucs have been surprisingly competitive against the Packers and the aforementioned Titans over the last two weeks, thanks in large part to the efforts of big back LeGarrette Blount, though even he hasn't been able to prevent the team's current slide from extending to five games.

Of course, Blount doesn't play defense, which has been Tampa's biggest problem of late, as they've dropped to 31st in the league in total yards allowed on account of their banged-up defensive line. Look for Cam Newton and Carolina's scampering duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart to tear up the Bucs on the ground while easily stealing away the two points bookies have given the Bucs for the location of this game.

San Diego Chargers

The Chargers are that special sort of team that just finds ways to lose games. If it isn't a pick (or three) by Philip Rivers, a fumble by Ryan Mathews or a missed tackle in the running game by a surprisingly porous defense, you can bet Norv Turner will save the day with a mystifying move of some sort from the sidelines.

You'd think a game on Monday night against the lowly Jaguars would be a "gimme" for San Diego, but things have gotten so bad over the team's current six-game stumble that beating a team with a beat-up defense, a quandary at quarterback and an interim head coach is a thoroughly questionable proposition.

Throw in the East-to-West move by the Bolts, and their three-point margin in Sin City's books looks ever more tenuous.
