Cotto vs. Margarito 2: Why This Rivalry Is Good Enough for a Trilogy
Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto will engage in their second fight tonight, and if it's anything close to their first bout, we are in for a real treat.
This fight has a chance of not only being similar, but possibly even better than the last one. If that’s how it turns out, these two fighters need to meet for a third time in the future, especially if Cotto wins.
These two competitors hate each other with high intensity. They hate each other so much that they didn’t even have a face-to-face showdown like we see from boxers to promote their fights.
If you want a bloodbath war between two competitors, this fight is for you.
Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) took the first fight in the 11th round, but both fighters had the advantage at different rounds of the fight. It was a back and forth type of deal.
Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs) had his opportunities early in the fight, but failed to execute down the stretch.
It was the type of fight that left fans wanting more. If they can rival that performance, or even come close to it, then a third fight should be in the books.
Tonight's fight is an underdog type of fight that many want to see, but the average boxing fan might not know a lot about the rivalry.
Madison Square Garden will be sold out for their rematch. It is obviously must-see TV. Nearly 18,000 spectators at MSG will see this fight live, and many more will watch it at home on pay-per-view.
It won’t disappoint. Fighting fans will be begging for a rematch afterwards.
This is exactly the type of fight that people want to see. They love watching two guys beat the daylights out of each other.
Sports, as a whole, are so much more compelling when two teams or competitors hate one another. We will see the direct proof of that tonight.
We will all want a rematch after witnessing Margarito-Cotto Part Two.
If Cotto defeats Margarito, I believe a rematch is inevitable.
