Cotto vs. Margarito 2: Boxing Villain Will Get Dropped by Champ

Patrick ClarkeDec 3, 2011

Junior middleweight title-holder Miguel Cotto will avenge his July 2008 loss to Antonio Margarito Saturday night in New York City convincingly.

Margarito won a controversial bout three years ago in which Cotto accused him of using hardened hand wraps.

Margarito was caught trying to enter the ring against Shane Mosley in 2009 with the wraps and, ever since, the rivalry has grown between the Puerto Rican, Cotto, and the Mexican, Margarito.

Cotto has made it clear that he has little if any respect for Margarito for allegedly threatening his life inside the ring back in 2008.

The animosity will no doubt produce an epic slugfest, which will end in knockout fashion.

Margarito took a beating from Manny Pacquiao last year and had to have surgery on his eye. His peeper will be fair game and a prime target for Cotto Saturday night, and should provide a critical weakness for Margarito.

Both fighters are close in age, Cotto is 31 and Margarito is 33. But the inspiration will lay in Cotto's corner all night long.

Cotto was on the wrong end of Margarito's gloves three years ago, and according to him, he had his promising future derailed by a "criminal in the sport."

Arguably no boxer in history has had as much time to focus on such a motivator as Cotto has, and that gives him an incredible edge in this fight.

Margarito is reprising the role of the villain in this main event, and that doesn't bode well for him. He not only has to win, but validate his first victory in the process.

Cotto will have far more support ringside Saturday night, and he has been waiting more than three years for this rematch.

The champ, not the villain, will reign supreme at Madison Square Garden.
