2011 Bowl Projections: LSU-Alabama Title Game Would Prove BCS Isn't Broken

Nicholas GossDec 2, 2011

If LSU and Alabama earn berths into the BCS National Championship Game this season, then the system will prove that it can do its job properly, which is to determine the two best teams and have them play for the title.

The BCS is not a perfect system, and for all of its faults, it has found the two best teams for the national title more often than not.

Sometimes with all the debate over non-BCS conference schools such as Houston, TCU and Boise State getting screwed and not having a chance to play for the title, we forget that the point of the current system is to find the two best teams.

I think it's clear that, with the possible exception of TCU last season and their amazing defense, there has never been a non-BCS school worthy of playing in a national championship game.

Fans of Oklahoma State will believe their Cowboys deserve a shot at a national championship if they destroy the rival Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday.

Unfortunately for them, the Cowboys just aren't on the level of Alabama or LSU.

The two SEC powerhouses have the two best defenses in the country, and the Crimson Tide and Tigers are No. 1 and 2 in points allowed per game, respectively.

There's no question these are the best teams. Not only have they gone through a brutal conference schedule, with Alabama losing only one game and LSU remaining unbeaten, they have challenged themselves with tough out-of-conference opponents.

LSU beat Oregon and West Virginia, the best teams in their respective conferences. Alabama beat a talented Penn State team early in the season.

The BCS has many faults, but one thing it will get right this season is having the correct two teams playing for the crystal ball trophy in January—and those schools are LSU and Alabama.
